Further research shows that the gang has scammed several monastery orders through telephone scam. Victims received a phone call from someone who occurred as a bank employee. There would be an urgent problem, after which it was asked to install the Anydesk program. In this way the scammers were able to take over the computer remotely and carry out bank transactions.
According to the diocese of Ghent, a total of seven monasteries have been hit, including in Tielt, Oudenaarde and Wetteren. The police call on all religious orders to be extra vigilant for suspicious phone calls.
