Olympic champion Philipp Raimund still has room for improvement in ski flying on the Kulm despite finishing sixth in the first competition.
“That wasn’t quite the step I would have hoped for today, but tomorrow we would like to attack again,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher on “ARD”.
Raimund “did good training, that was okay,” emphasized the DSV head coach, who also found the 25-year-old’s second jump of 209.5 m “okay.” “But it was the first jump today that wasn’t enough for him to be at the front. And we have to change that tomorrow.”
On Raimund’s first attempt, where he landed after 203.5 m, “there was rather too little rotation away from the take-off table,” analyzed Horngacher.
Raimund, who achieved the best ski flying result of his career with sixth place, said: “It was really exciting. I made a few steps forward in flying, even if I didn’t break my distance record.” This stands at 220.0 m.
Ski jumping: Horngacher praise for Wellinger
The second best DSV eagle was Andreas Wellinger in ninth place. “Andi did well, jumped quite well. The second one wasn’t quite ideal, he also had a bit of bad conditions, but I think he still managed a pretty good placement,” said Horngacher.
Former ski flying world champion Karl Geiger took 20th place.
Slovenia’s superstar Domen Prevc, who can hardly be denied winning the overall World Cup, came in just ahead of Stephan Embacher with flights of 213.5 and 228.5 m (433.0 points).
The super team Olympic champion from Austria was still leading after the first round. Ultimately, he missed his first World Cup victory by just under a meter.
In third place, Embacher’s compatriot Jonas Schuster, son of former German national coach Werner Schuster, was on the podium for the first time in the World Cup.
