Phil Collins and his Genesis bandmates have sold a large chunk of their music rights. As the “Wall Street Journal” reported that more than $300 million worth of song rights were sold to Concord Music Group.

The rights sold include music by Genesis, Phil Collins’ solo career, as well as Mike & the Mechanics, guitarist Mike Rutherford’s side project. This includes master recordings as well as publication rights. In March 2022, Genesis officially played the last concert of their career in London. Ex-frontman Peter Gabriel was in the audience.

Bob Valentine, President of Concord Music, told the newspaper that they want to bring the Collins and Genesis back catalog to a new generation. “In the world we live in today, with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, all these things driving consumption of older music, there are definitely ways for us as a record label to bring that music back to life,” he said valentine

Phil Collins and Genesis are following the example of a number of well-known artists. Bob Dylan had already sold the publishing rights for his entire song catalog to Universal in 2020, and in early 2022 he also gave up the rights to the recordings to Sony Music. Bruce Springsteen also sold his music rights to Sony in 2021, while Neil Young donated half of his song catalog to the Hipgnosis Songs Fund.
