A skiing legend Petter Northug hasn’t buried his championship dreams, even though he stopped competing in the World Cup in 2018.

The 39-year-old Norwegian, who has won four Olympic medals and 16 World Cup medals in his career, is looking to experience the thrill of the prestigious Games again, but this time possibly representing another country.

Northug has spoken several times in the media about his desire to compete again, but there is no room in Norway’s tough national team. However, the solution could be found in a national team change.

Swedish SVT’s Play service in the Carina Bergfeldt program Northug revealed his latest plans.

– I have become friends with the Mexican ambassador to Norway and I visited on Monday to discuss the process by which I could get a Mexican passport, Northug said in the program from the beginning of the week.

With the help of a new passport, the skiing legend is aiming for the World Championships in Falun in 2027. He stresses that the opportunity to compete in Norwegian colors is not an option.

– All you need is a passport. No Norwegian passport, it won’t do, says Northug.

Northug has also mapped other opportunities in the past, such as Austria, Liechtenstein, Malta and Qatar.

According to the athlete, the schedule is tight: May 1, 2026 is the last day to get the country change officially approved if he wants to be on the starting line at the World Championships.
