Peter Maffay commented on the state of German politics at “Maischberger”.
At “Maischberger” on Tuesday evening, January 20th, the topic was Trump and Greenland, but also the reintroduction of compulsory military service. Moderator Sandra Maischberger first spoke to former Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg and US political advisor Andrew Langer, but in the second half of the show also to Peter Maffay. In an individual talk, the 76-year-old was critical of the current political situation in Germany.
Which Maffay finds threatening
He went straight to the point: “The incompetence frustrates me,” said Peter Maffay in an interview with Maischberger about current politics. The musician also commented on his experiences during his time in Canada: “I found the proximity to the USA threatening,” he said.
In the debate about a possible reintroduction of compulsory military service, the “Tabaluga” creator also sided with the young generation: “You should have included the young people much more,” he criticized.
Criticism of SPD development and connection to Wagenknecht
When asked about his political position and his relationship with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance, Maffay explained: “I have been friends with Oskar (Lafontaine) for a long time, and with Sahra later.” According to his own statements, his relationship with the SPD has changed significantly. “I voted for the SPD for a long time and am now having difficulty continuing to do so,” said Maffay.
In his opinion, the Social Democrats have undergone a problematic development. While the party used to be a real “people’s party”, it is continuously losing support – it has “rejuvenated itself every year in the form of percentages”, as Maffay put it.
His final assessment was also critical and devastating: “I simply assume that the party is no longer really close to the people on the street.”
