Boxing trainer Peter Fury will prepare Rico Verhoeven from Halsteren for the titanic battle in the boxing ring against Oleksandr Usyk over the next three months. “It’s time to work,” he says on Instagram.
The Brit is the uncle and former trainer of Tyson Fury, former world heavyweight champion. Peter Fury will now work with Verhoeven.
In the boxing ring at the end of May
Verhoeven has stopped kickboxing and announced at the end of February that he would enter the boxing ring. On May 23, he will face Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
While trainer Fury is currently still in England, he will soon go to the Netherlands for three months to prepare Verhoeven for the fight.
Fury says he is looking forward to the training camp. “Two fantastic people and two great champions. What a privilege,” he says in a video.
Retire as world champion
At the end of November, Rico Verhoeven announced that he would retire as world kickboxing champion. He wanted to focus on new possibilities within martial arts.
The news that the kickboxer would voluntarily give up his world title sent shockwaves through the combat sports world. Verhoeven was world champion for no less than 4,418 days.
Opinions differ as to whether Verhoeven can also prove that he is the king in the ring in boxing. “I think it will be very tough for him,” former professional boxer Eddy Smulders previously told Omroep Brabant.
