In 1976, there was no bigger rock star in the world than Peter Frampton. His concert album “Frampton Comes Alive!” spent ten weeks at the top of the Billboard charts that year, and Frampton sold more records than Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, Wings and any other band on the charts.
But it was simply impossible to build on that – and a good decade later he found himself as a member of David Bowie’s backing band because his solo career had completely stalled. In the 1990s, however, he re-established himself as a popular live act and continues to play to this day, even though the muscle disease inclusion body myositis is increasingly slowing him down.
An extraordinary rock & roll story about endurance and survival – and that’s exactly what the new documentary “Frampton” tells, directed by his long-time bandleader Rob Arthur. The film premieres on June 4th at the Tribeca Festival, the trailer can be seen exclusively on ROLLING STONE.
Cameron Crowe’s verdict
“He was the one who took a rocket to where no rocket had gone before,” says Cameron Crowe in the trailer. “This is the pinnacle of rock.”
The film also collects interviews with Tom Morello, Kate Hudson, Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Bill Wyman, Tommy Shaw, Alice Cooper, Herb Alpert, Roger Daltrey, Chris Lord-Alge, Mary Lindes, Nancy Wilson, Julian Frampton, Mia Frampton, Jade Frampton, Rob Arthur – and of course Peter Frampton himself.
In 2019, Frampton spoke to ROLLING STONE about the long-lasting impact that “Frampton Comes Alive!” had for his career. “It’s a phenomenon: When something gets so big, for whatever reason, worldwide, it becomes ubiquitous until you get to the point where you can’t hear it anymore,” he said. “I really think we’ve reached that point. And I used to give anything to hear myself on the radio – and then there came a moment where I thought, ‘I wish they wouldn’t play me so much.'”
Premiere at the Tribeca Festival
Frampton has not toured since November 2025 and currently has no concerts scheduled. However, he will appear in person at the film premiere at the Tribeca Festival. Tickets for the screening are available via the festival website.
