Peter Bosz has been at the helm of PSV for three seasons and in all seasons he has won the Eredivisie with his club. Yet the 62-year-old trainer faced a dilemma this year. His contract was expiring and so he had to decide: should I stop or should I continue for a while. Ultimately, Bosz decided to extend his contract by two years until 2027. Also because he does not feel like lying on the couch yet. Now that PSV is champion, he looks back on this important choice.
After the match against Feyenoord on February 1, the redeeming word came: Peter Bosz extended his contract with PSV. Something that was already somewhat in the air, but there were still doubts. Although Bosz himself was out quite quickly. “I’m really enjoying it here. I’ve also been to clubs where it was different. Before the winter break I already knew that I wanted to stay.”
However, that choice was not as easy as it seems for the coach. “It is also something that is fighting within me. What takes priority? Finally being able to do things that are really fun when they come to mind. What every grandfather does. That can also be fun.” Yet Bosz does not see himself retiring yet. “I’m also afraid that if I really lie down on that couch, I will quickly become an old man and I don’t want that.”
“A cup of coffee, some lazy talk and then the day begins.”
But what does the Apeldoorn resident do to avoid growing old? Because the years just keep ticking by. “I get up at half past six every day and I’m at the club at seven o’clock. That’s a certain routine and discipline that I feel good about.” He then starts his day together with the staff. “Then we grab a cup of coffee, do some silly talk and have breakfast together. And then our day starts at a quarter to eight.”
The coach doesn’t really sleep in. He has often said that after matches he is busy with football until late at night. “We train at twelve o’clock. Then I often only sleep for three or four hours. I then go to the club a bit tired. But when I am here, I go along with the energy again.”
“As a trainer, I consciously chose a different route.”
Bosz also tries to keep up physically, despite his reasonable 62 years. “I always go to the gym at the end of the day to do a little strength training.” We won’t see him on the bench for the next two years. “As a trainer, I deliberately chose a different route than others. I started at AGOVV and if you are now at the absolute top in the Netherlands and say: I’m quitting, then that is still a bit too early. It is better to do that when you are 64, although I may say something else.”
