Perfume Genius: “Ugly Season” (Review & Stream)

Perhaps the full abstract beauty of “Ugly Season” is only revealed when one listens to the music as it is intended: as the soundtrack to a short film by visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite. In addition, Mike Hadreas alias Perfume Genius has already performed the album as theater music. With this knowledge in mind, “Ugly Season” can be heard as a concept about the development of utopias. “Just A Room” oscillates between organ toccata and music box melody, “Herem” is an enchanted worship, a room where time magically stands still.

A terrific bulky round dance

In the “Scherzo” Hadreas pulls out all the Expressionist stops. His genius is that his artistic ambitions are too entertaining to wither away as sound installations in museums. The title track sounds like Prince and Leonard Cohen recorded a Shabba Ranks dancehall tune. The hypnotic “Eye In The Wall”, the “Photograph” supported by a steam press beat and the infernal “Hellbent” form the highlights of the grandiosely bulky dance.
