José “Pepe” Mujica died on Tuesday, May 13 at age 89. In his last radio interview, on May 2, the former Uruguayan president left definitions against Javier Milei and the Argentines.

Mujica described Milei as a “very negative counterweight”comparing it with an American ruler instead of a Latin American. According to your perspective, Milei could “fracture” plans in conjunction with Brazil under the presidency of Lula da Silva.

The conversation, which was broadcast on the Sarandí radio of Uruguay, passed in the farm that Mujica had near Montevideo. There the journalists were received. In the midst of an analysis of geopolitics, special mentions were made about Argentina. Before the question of the interviewers, Mujica expressed his desire for luck for Argentina, pointing out the difficulties of journalism in the country and joking about the “daily gossip” of the country. “It’s amazing Argentina,” he added.

When addressing differences in the region, Mujica commented that there are ideological problems, but also “nonsense.” He said that he cannot judge everyone for his own ideology and that the political struggle must focus on reality, seeking balance with Argentina and taking advantage of the opportunity with Lula.

In relation to integration into Latin America, the former Uruguayan president had claimed that they are still far from having a common gesture and that, despite having created many countries, they have not been able to forge a united homelanddescribing the situation as weakness.

Finally, Mujica called on unity in Uruguay, arguing that, often, the one who loses goes to opposition with resentment. He stressed the importance of recognizing that they are a small country, whose strength lies in not causing problems to others, and emphasized the need to take advantage of that characteristic.

Mujica’s death was communicated by Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi. “With deep pain we communicated that our partner Pepe died. President, militant, referent and driver. We are going to miss you a lot of dear. Thank you for everything you gave us and for your deep love for your people,” he said.
