Pep Guardiola has ex-BVB professional on the slip

After selling left-back Zinchenko, Manchester City need a successor. When searching, the club has a former Dortmund player in mind.

Manchester City are apparently in talks with RSC Anderlecht about Sergio Gomez’s move. This is reported by the well-informed portal “The Athletic”. The Spanish full-back is therefore the preferred candidate for the open post on the left in defence.

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Marc Cucurella, who was previously a candidate, is too expensive for Manchester City. Brighton’s demands of the equivalent of around 60 million euros were too much for coach Pep Guardiola’s team. Manchester only wanted to pay 48 million.

Breakthrough in Belgium

Gomez was trained at FC Barcelona and moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2018. After an unsuccessful year with three short appearances for the BVB professionals, he switched to the Spanish club SD Huesca on loan in 2019. He was a regular there and was sold by BVB to RSC Anderlecht after two years. In Belgium, as a left-back, he scored 5 goals and set up 12 more in 34 games.

His offensive qualities – Gomez used to be a winger – also make him interesting for Pep Guardiola’s system at Manchester City. In addition, its price is cheaper. Gomez’ market value is estimated by “transfermarkt.de” at ten million euros, his contract is valid until 2025. But: Raphael Guerreiro should also be a candidate for the “Skyblues”. The Portuguese from Borussia Dortmund has more experience at a high level but would have less development potential than Gomez.

The fact is: Manchester City urgently need a new man for the left-back after the sale of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal. Ideally, until the league opener on August 7 against West Ham.
