Pep Guardiola declares war on polluted waters and campaigns worldwide for the disposal of untreated sewage

According to UNESCO estimates, 80 percent of wastewater worldwide is returned to the environment untreated1, polluting the world’s waterways and creating risks to human health. Ahead of the 2023 United Nations (UN) Water Conference, Manchester City Football Club and global water technology leader Xylem (NYSE: XYL) are calling on football fans worldwide to take action on wastewater pollution.

The new ‘Water Heroes’ website invites football fans to engage with educational resources and add their name to a statement stressing that governing bodies must meet their wastewater treatment obligations. The ‘Water Heroes’ website offers the opportunity to win game tickets and other prizes by registering as a water advocate.

In support of the campaign, Manchester City Football Club and Xylem have released a short film starring club manager Pep Guardiola. The film shows the reality of a world drowning in untreated sewage and aims to inspire football fans to take action. The initiative advances Xylem and Manchester City Football Club in their quest to create a global movement of one billion water citizens committed to solving the world’s water challenges.

“Manchester City’s partnership with Xylem is about maximizing the power of our collective voice to raise awareness of critical water issues,” said Pep Guardiola. “Our world is more polluted than ever and untreated sewage continues to affect the health of millions of people. We ask fans to come together and demand action before it’s too late. It’s time to end water wastage. ”

The UN Water Conference brings together stakeholders from governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and the scientific community to make progress on global water issues. As this is the first conference of its kind in 50 years, young football fans will have a unique opportunity to join the discussion.

“As the demand for clean water increases, we must do what we can to protect this vital resource,” said Patrick Decker, President and CEO of Xylem. “The 2023 UN Water Conference provides a global platform to put wastewater pollution on government agendas and make progress at scale. Together with Manchester City Football Club, we are calling on young fans to take action to protect water by demanding action against sewage pollution – our future and the health of our planet depend on it.”

To further raise awareness of this issue, Xylem and Manchester City Football Club are partnering with Global Citizen – a movement that empowers millions of people around the world to take action on causes that matter. Launching on World Water Day, March 22, the collaboration features Manchester City women’s team players alongside young water leaders from around the world to highlight the impact of raw sewage on communities around the world.
