There will be an emergency night shelter for up to 225 refugees in Peize. The municipality of Noordenveld wants to help the registration center in Ter Apel with this.
The choice for the shelter was the old municipal yard on the De Westerd industrial estate in Peize. The shelter is available from January 15 to March 15. With this, Peize takes over the emergency shelter from Beilen, where there is shelter in tents until January 15.
According to the municipality of Noordenveld, it remains to be seen whether refugees will also use the shelter. Reception locations have been opened in Biddinghuizen and Zaanstad. The need is therefore no longer as great as in the past. The night shelter in Beilen is currently not or hardly used.
However, the number of asylum seekers staying overnight at the registration center in Ter Apel has been steadily increasing in recent weeks. While 1,537 beds were still available in mid-November when the large reception center in Biddinghuizen was opened, this number was 1,980 in the night from last Monday to Tuesday. No more than 2,000 people are allowed to stay in the center. As a result, the COA is threatened for the first time with an increased fine of 50,000 euros, which the judge recently imposed as a penalty for an overcrowded registration center.
The emergency night shelter that is now coming to Peize has been moving from one northern municipality to another for a year. Stadskanaal, 2nd Exloërmond, Oude Pekela, Zuidwolde and Beilen preceded Peize.
Information for local residents
Local residents and entrepreneurs in the immediate area have been personally informed about the temporary emergency night shelter. Previous experiences have shown that such night shelter locations do not cause any nuisance.
