Pedestrian (93) in mortal danger after collision in the center of Loppem: “He wanted to cross the street with his walking stick” | Zedelgem

Loppem/BrugesIn the Stationsstraat in Loppem, a 93-year-old man from Loppem was seriously injured in an accident on Saturday afternoon. He was hit by a car while crossing the street with his walking stick.

The collision happened around 5:30 p.m. The 93-year-old victim, who lives in Loppem itself, wanted to cross the Stationsstraat on foot near the Speedy Snack snack bar. However, an 86-year-old driver from Bruges who came with his car from the direction of Zedelgem noticed the elderly man with a walking stick too late. The man in his nineties was hit by the vehicle and landed hard on the road surface. The emergency services rushed to the scene and gave the victim first aid on the spot.

The elderly man was then taken to hospital in critical condition. The local police Het Houtsche is investigating the circumstances of the accident. It is certain that there is no pedestrian crossing at the location of the collision. “The driver of the car had not been drinking either,” the Bruges public prosecutor’s office said.

The victim underwent surgery at the hospital on Saturday night. His life is still in danger, although his condition is said to be stable.
