Pedestrian (93) in mortal danger after collision in the center of Loppem: “He wanted to cross the street with his walking stick” | Zedelgem

The 93-year-old victim from Loppem wanted to cross the Stationsstraat on foot at the Speedy Snack snack shop around 5.30 pm. An 86-year-old driver from Bruges noticed the elderly man with a walking stick too late. The man in his nineties was hit and landed hard on the road. The emergency services rushed to the scene and gave the victim first aid.

The elderly man was then taken to hospital in critical condition. The local police are investigating the accident. It is certain that there is no pedestrian crossing at the location of the collision. “The driver had not been drinking either,” the Bruges public prosecutor’s office said. The victim underwent surgery at the hospital on Saturday night. His life is still in danger, although his condition is said to be stable.
