With a noise 6-1 win against SSV Ulm, Hamburger SV made the return to the Bundesliga perfect and at the same time sealed the descent of the Ulm.
The Ulm, even before the matchday with six points behind the relegation place, also left the last, arithmetical chance to avoid relegation and have to go back to the 3. League after just one season.
The guests had taken the lead through Tom Gaal in the 7th minute. But the HSV struck back, Ludocvit Reis (10th minute), Ransford Königsdörffer (42nd) and Davie Selke (45.+4) shot a 3-1 lead before the break. An own goal of Ulms Philipp Stromf (49th) made the preliminary decision right after the restart – and the start of the HSV promotion party in the stadium. Königsdörffer (62nd) followed up with his second goal. Daniel Elfadli provided the 6-1 final score.
“We put so much hard work in, the team, the staff, the coaches”said promotion coach Merlin Polzin at the sports show microphone. “We did it for exactly this moment, for all HSVers. We’re back.”

The HSV was still missing a victory for the longed-for return to the Bundesliga on the penultimate matchday-a constellation that regularly let the “second division dino” flutter in the league end sprint in the past.
Ulm shocked HSV with lead – quick answer from rice
And right from the start, the guests from Ulm feared the worst: the penultimate table started offensive and earned the first chances: Lukasz Poreba saved Felix Higl at the last moment. The Hamburgers did not get the subsequent corner kick, Gaal used this from a short distance to the lead.
The early shock for the promotion favorite – but the Hamburgers quickly struck back, with their first dangerous goal approach: Miro Muheim put the ball clever in the back of the Ulm defense, rice put the ball placed in the lower left corner.
Heuer-Fernandes defends penalty
Ulm unmoved, as a result, did not present himself like a relegation candidate. The Ulm still had more possession and got the huge chance for another lead: In the 32nd minute, Higl was caught after the shot of Muheim’s long leg – after minutes of review by the Var there was the penalty for Ulm. It was only last week, in the defeat against Hanover, that Oliver Batista-Meier had shot. This time Semir Telalovic – but Daniel Heuer -Fernandes caught the right corner and parried.
The Volkspark celebrated the defended penalty like its own goal. Pyros were burned down in the HSV fan block – and the Hamburgers used the momentum, favored by Ulm inattentiveness: Stromf had a steep pass through, goalkeeper Niclas Thiede was far too far in front of his box, Königsdörffer for this – and completed with a remarkable lifter for the HSV.
Königsdörffer and Selke ignite Volkspark
The stadium now finally lit, Ulm lost an overview: the flank of Jean-Luc Dompé sailed exactly on the second post, where Selke headed freely to 3: 1. Four goal grades in the first half, three goals – goal -hotted Selke push the fans again on the way to the cabin – but they had long since switched to party mode.
The last tentative doubts evaporated into the evening sky immediately after the restart: Stromf, who had already made an unfortunate figure before the second goal, made a slapstick owner: Thiede let the next Dompé flank bounce forward, the ball flipped against the leg of the Ulm defender and slipped over the line.
The Ulm resulted in their fate, but Königsdörffer put a highlight again: Hamburg’s best that evening pulled the left wing unstoppably inwards, left half the Ulm defense and put the ball in the short corner. As a reward, after 70 minutes he was allowed to go out of the square and the final whistle – and the Bundesliga return of the HSV after seven years. Elfadli made half a dozen full shortly before the end, the Hamburg fans had already set up the mandatory space storm.
Hamburg in Fürth, Ulm against Münster
The HSV can start a relaxed trip to Greuther Fürth (May 18, 3:30 p.m.) on the last match day. Relegation Ulm says goodbye to Prussia Münster from the 2nd league at home.
