Peak of corona infections in China | Coronavirus what you need to know

A total of 13,146 corona infections were reported in China on Sunday, the highest number since the peak of the first wave more than two years ago, health authorities report.

This involved 1,455 patients with symptoms and 11,691 asymptomatic cases. “No new deaths have been reported,” the National Health Commission said in a statement. The highly contagious omikron variant has spread to more than a dozen provinces.

Almost all 25 million inhabitants of Shanghai, the economic capital of China, have been in lockdown since Saturday. In recent days, the city has become the epicenter of a new wave of omikron infections.

Tens of millions of Chinese are also in lockdown in the northeast of the country.
