Patrick Vieira becomes coach of Racing Straßburg: 4th professional station

Return to France

Racing Strasbourg has signed Patrick Vieira as their new coach. As the French first division club announced on Sunday, the 1998 world champion will receive a three-year contract. Most recently, the 47-year-old Vieira coached the English Premier League club Crystal Palace, where he was released in March.

“He fits the profile we were looking for: a coach with international experience who also has a good knowledge of Ligue 1 and young players,” Marc Keller, president of the traditional Alsatian club, said in a statement. As a coach, Vieira has not yet been able to build on his great successes as a player. Before his engagement in London he had coached OGC Nice and New York City FC – with moderate success. As a player, the former defensive midfielder (107 international matches) won the 2000 European Championship as well as the World Cup.

Racing Strasbourg, which had secured its place in Ligue 1 late in the past season, was in the headlines just a few days ago when it became known that Todd Boehly, the owner of the English club FC Chelsea, is joining the Alsatians as a major shareholder. Vieira was the head coach after his time with Manchester City’s youth team in charge of the professional teams of New York City and OGC Nice before signing with the “Eagles” in London. With 74 games, he spent his shortest term in the south of the British capital.
