In a move that revives tensions within the government coalition and highlights the internal struggles for power within La Libertad Avanza, the senator and former Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich this week appointed the former deputy Gerardo Milman as an advisor in his office in the Upper House, generating strong political and media reactions. The legislator signed the transitional staff decree that incorporates Milman into her team, a gesture that parliamentary sources describe as an “explicit support” for one of her most trusted collaborators.

The appointment was made within the framework of the first session of the new ordinary period and was approved en bloc by the Senate itself, taking advantage of the package of promotions and appointments that accompanied the opening of sessions. The move has a clear political background: Milman, a leader with a long career in different areas of the center-right and close to Bullrich for years, had been left out of the candidacies and other important positions by decision of Karina Mileigeneral secretary of the Presidency and one of the most influential figures of the ruling party along with her brother, the president Javier Milei.

On several occasions, the younger sister of the Milei family would have vetoed the inclusion of Milman both on the legislative lists and in executive positions linked to the national government, arguing political differences and strategic objections that led to the postponement of his formal incorporation into spaces of power. According to sources consulted by this medium, this rejection was sustained even in the face of Bullrich’s attempts to place him in a management position with executive rank, a maneuver that ended up being postponed years ago due to pressure from Casa Rosada.

Milman, whose political career includes time in the Chamber of Deputies and several executive positions, also carries the weight of having been mentioned in judicial investigations related to the attack against the vice president. Cristina Fernández de Kirchnera chapter that generated strong public repudiation and complicated her positioning within sectors of the ruling party and the libertarian coalition. The former minister’s decision is part of a context of growing friction between her own leadership aspirations within the ruling party space and the consolidation of Karina Milei’s influence in the hard core of the government.

Some interpret the appointment as a sign of Bullrich’s autonomy in the face of the strategic lock imposed by the general secretariat, while underlining the complexity of an alliance that, although formally unified under the mileista flag, exhibits underlying tensions and different competing power projects. It is estimated that in the coming months it could be shown whether this designation deepens the discrepancies between the different decision-making centers within the national government.
