A patient died at a special dental practice in Oosterhout in January. This happened after a visit to an ‘anesthetic dentist’. The practice confirmed this to Omroep Brabant when asked: “We are deeply affected by this sad event.”
An ‘anesthetic dentist’ treats people who are very afraid of the dentist. You will be put under anesthesia by an anesthesiologist. This is a doctor who specializes in anesthesia, anesthesia and pain relief. “The anesthetist works with recognized, safe means and monitors your health during the treatment,” says the practice. After the anesthetist’s treatment, the dentist does his work and you don’t feel anything.
“By often combining multiple treatments in one session, we maximize the effectiveness of the anesthesia. Our goal is to offer you a fresh start, where we strive for the best possible recovery of your teeth,” it says on the practice’s website.
Dead
Yet things went completely wrong in January. A patient died during or after treatment at the practice. “We deeply regret what happened. We are deeply affected by this sad event and our thoughts and condolences go out to the relatives,” a spokesperson said.
It is not known exactly what happened. “Together with the Health and Youth Inspectorate (IGJ), we have asked an independent committee to investigate the exact circumstances and to uncover all the facts. We fully cooperate in this investigation.”
No details
The IGJ was unable to comment on the case to Omroep Brabant. The dental practice also provides no further details. “Given that the investigation is currently in full swing, we do not wish to comment further on this at this time.”
