Innovations are essential in today’s technology age. A patent can protect new designs, products or technical processes for a while from imitation of the competition. In this way, companies can secure exclusive marketing rights. The patent applications of some companies per year go into thousands.

Germany is considered the country of inventors in Europe. Over 50,000 patent applications were received in 2024 at the German Patent and Trademark Office, DPMA for short. However, there are even more registrations at the US Patent Office, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It was over 466,000 here last year. The top 15 of the companies with most patent applications in the USA are presented in the following ranking. Status of the ranking is January 7, 2025.

Fairview Research, a company of IFI Claims Research Patent Services, publishes the number of patent applications received by the US Patent Office of Uspto last year. The following ranking presents the 15 companies, most of which were registered in 2024. Stand is January 7, 2025.

15th place: Microsoft Technology Licensing LLC
The international hard and software developer Microsoft, headquartered in the US Redmond, forms the bottom of the company with the most new patents 2024 with 1,707 patent applications.

14th place: Toyota Motor Corp.
The Toyota Motor Corp. Last year registered two percent fewer patents than in the previous year: The company submitted 1,779 patent applications in 2024, in 2023 there were 1,859 patents. The multinational automobile manufacturer is one of the largest worldwide and is based in Japan.

13th place: Micron Technology
Micron Technology 2024 submitted 1,796 patent applications. That is 20 percent fewer patent applications than 2023, with which the company has risen four places in the ranking.

12th place: Boe Technology Group Co. Ltd.
The Boe Technology Group Co LTD is a Chinese manufacturer of electronic components for interface devices, intelligent integration of medicine and technology and intelligent IoT systems. The company reported 1,870 patents in 2024, 14 percent more than in the previous year.

11th place: Intel
Ranking goes to one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers: Intel. With 1,931 patent applications in 2024, however, it is ten percent less than in the previous year. The company in the ranking has slipped around one place.

10th place: Google LLC
Google, an American technology company with headquarters in the California city of Mountain View, starts with 2,054 patent applications. Thanks to 12 percent more registrations compared to the previous year, the company rises three places.

9th place: Canon
The Japanese company Canon is the world market leader in selling digital cameras and ends up in ninth place in the ranking of companies with the most patent applications. In 2024, Canon submitted a total of 2,329 patent applications in the Uspto, 19 percent less than in the previous year.

8th place: International Business Machines (IBM)
The American IT and consulting company ends up with eighth place. Overall, the listed group, based in the state of New York, reported 2,465 patents – that is 33 percent less than in the previous year. The company’s activities include the entire spectrum of computer systems, software, networks, storage technology and microelectronics.

7th place: Samsung Display CO
With 2,596 received patent applications in the USPTO, Samsung Display CO occupies the seventh place in the ranking of the companies with the most patent applications. That is one percent more registrations than in 2023.

6th place: LG Electronics
LG Electronics takes sixth place with 2,768 registered patents 2024. The company from South Korea is a subsidiary of the LG Group and, among other things, produces smartphones, screens and other electronic household appliances.

5th place: Huawei Technologies
The Chinese telecommunications supplier and hardware manufacturer Huawei Technologies registered 3,046 patents in 2024 and improved by six ranks in the ranking.

4th place: Apple
In 2023, the US company from Cupertino reported 2,536 patents in the USPTO. In 2024 it was 3,082 and thus 22 percent more patent applications. Apple is one of the world’s leading hardware and software developers.

3rd place: Qualcomm
The semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm is one of the market leaders worldwide in the area of mobile phone chips. The California company registered 3,422 patents in 2024 – that is 11 percent less than in 2023.

2nd place: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC)
Second place secures TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd.) with 3,989 patent applications. The company based in Hsinchu, Taiwan, is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of semiconductor products.

1st place: Samsung Electronics
With 6,377 patent applications, Samsung Electronics secures first place in this ranking. This enabled Samsung to improve compared to the previous year: in 2023 Samsung was still number one of the companies with the most patent applications with 6,165 registered patents. The South Korean company is the flagship of the Samsung Group and one of the largest electronics groups worldwide.
