Passionate statement on the war in Ukraine

Recently, Sean Penn attended a briefing on the situation of the Ukrainian armed forces somewhere in Kyiv. This is documented by photos from the official press service. The actor-director returned to the Ukrainian capital a few days ago to continue his documentary on the war with Russia, which he started in November. Now he sent a passionate message to his native country USA and the world, which was published through various social media channels.

“It’s already a brutal mistake that has taken lives and broken hearts, and if he doesn’t back down, I believe Mr. Putin will make a terrible mistake for all of humanity,” Penn said. “President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have risen to become historical symbols of courage and principle, Ukraine is the spearhead for the democratic realization of our dreams. If we allow her to fight alone, our souls as America are lost.”

Previously, Newsweek magazine reported that Penn had been visiting government officials in the city. The presidential office then issued a statement of its own, praising his efforts and thanking him for traveling to Ukraine “to tell the world the truth about the Russian invasion of our country.”

On his Twitter account, Penn currently recommends the 2015 film “Winter on Fire – Ukraine’s Fight For Freedom” by Yevgeny Afineevsky about the background and struggles of the so-called “Euromaidan”, which emanated from the central Kiev Square in 2013 and that covered the whole country. The documentary received a nomination for Best Documentary at the 2016 Academy Awards.

It is not known whether Sean Penn is still in embattled Kyiv. The capital is currently in danger of being surrounded by Russian troops.
