In 1976, Count Maximilian von Spee gave the starting signal from the Eemshaven for the ferry connection between the North Groningen port and the German Wadden Island of Borkum. The then director of the German parent company AG Ems saw prospects in the Borkum line, which 50 years later around 400,000 guests use every year.
