Parties clash strongly over Islam schools in Flanders

The Flemish parties are clearly divided on the question of whether there should be room in Flanders for Islamic schools or not. This became apparent during a discussion about the file of the Islamic-inspired Plura C school in Genk. For Education Minister Ben Weyts, separate Islam schools “do not contribute to integration or a harmonious society”. But according to coalition partner CD&V, this attitude clashes with the constitutionally anchored freedom of education. Opposition party Groen accuses the N-VA minister of “treating different philosophies in an unequal way”.
