The Westerveld parking lot on the N34 near Emmen must be overhauled. The current parking space is under a high -voltage line and that is not useful in the event of calamities with trucks. There will also be a gas station at the care site.
The old gas station was demolished in 2018 due to the doubling of the N34 between Coevorden and Emmen.
The Drenthe Safety Region, which includes the fire brigade, wants to have moved the truck parking space. For example, if there is a fire in a truck, you cannot work with a platform under the high -voltage line. Trucks loaded with hazardous substances can pose a danger to the functioning of the high -voltage line. Trucks with flammable materials such as hay and wood chips are not allowed to park under high -voltage lines.
At the same time as the arrival of the new gas station, the province will redesign the care site Westerveld and install a separate parking space for trucks. According to the province, the parking space is widely used by trucks. It is the only parking space along the N34 between Emmen and the connection with the A28 at De Punt. Because truck drivers have to be able to rest on time due to the driving times law, the province wants to construct the truck parking space. The new gas station will also be the only tank option on the N34 towards Groningen.
The new gas station and a charging station have since been licensed and its construction will start this year or in 2026. The conversion of the Westerveld care site costs 550,000 euros. But there will soon be the rental income of the new gas station every year: 131,000 euros. And the De Blikken gas station on the other side in the Emmen-Coevorden travel direction will soon raise 81,000 euros annually, which money is used for adjustments to the Westerveld parking lot.
Provincial States will soon make a decision about the adjustment of Westerveld.
Gas station De Blikken at the care site of the same name was also demolished for the doubling of the N34. The cans are being rebuilt and the building of the gas station is now there. There will be a staffed gas station with a shop.
11,000 cars and trucks pass the cans and Westerveld every day.
