Parental leave, there won’t be an extra month

“TOwe added a month of optional, non-compulsory leave, paid at 80% and usable up to the child’s sixth year of life,” Giorgia Meloni said last November 22, specifying that the measure would only concern mothers. Thus, in the budget bill just approved by the government, you explained that you supported the family and the birth rate. Many of us understood that an extra month of parental leave would be introduced, and only for mothers. It is not so.

Parental leave, one month paid at 80%

At the time of those statements, the draft of the maneuver had not yet been published. In the final text which will be discussed in the next few days by the Parliamenthowever, it is better understood that the measure will only concern “working mothers”, but that it will not be a question of an extra month of optional leave.

Simply, of the months already foreseen, one, to be used within the six years of the child’s life, will be paid 80% of the salary (and not 30%), calculated on the basis of that of the month preceding the start of the period of leave of absence. To take advantage of it, the “working mother” must have completed the mandatory maternity leave period by 1 January 2023.

Parental leave (optional) and paternity and maternity leave (compulsory)

Parental leave, as described on the INPS website, is a period of abstention that can last for a total of ten months (but can go up to eleven in some cases) which can be shared between the two parents. It is worth repeating that parental leave, which is optional, is different from the compulsory maternity leave (5 months, to be used, if desired, also starting from the date of birth) and paternity leave (for which a daily allowance equal to 100% of salary is recognized).
