Paralympic athletes celebrate world records at German championship

Three world records for the Paralympic winner: Taliso Engel was in top form at the German short course championships less than two years before the summer games in Paris.

The 20-year-old, visually impaired man from Nuremberg improved his parade distance of 100 m breaststroke to 1:00.26 minutes in the para-swimmer competition in Düsseldorf – he would have finished fifth among the non-disabled athletes in Wuppertal.

Engel, the only competitor with a disability, had already improved there over the same distance. In Düsseldorf, he set two more world records in his S13 starting class: 50 m freestyle (23.38 seconds) and 200 m breaststroke (2:18.62 minutes).

Four-time Paralympic medalist Verena Schott set five world records in Düsseldorf. The 33-year-old improved the times over 100 m butterfly, 200 m backstroke, 200 m freestyle as well as 100 and 200 m individual medley.

On the way to the 2024 Paralympics, para-swimmers will have another major event coming up next year from July 31 to August 6 with the World Championships in Manchester.
