Niko Kappel from VfB Stuttgart won the gold medal in the shot put at the World Cup of Para Athletes in Neu Dehli. It is the first gold for Team Germany at the World Championships.
Despite difficult preparation, Niko Kappel showed a strong performance at the World Championships in New Delhi and bumped the four kilogram ball 13.34 meters away – by far the far. The runner -up, Bobirjion Omonov from Uzbekistan, came to a width of 12.36 meters.
“Everything hurts. My elbow, my fingers, everything. But that’s afraid. Today it was about the title. And we won it. That’s why I am extremely relieved,” said Rio’s Paralympics winner in 2016 after the competition: “Today I bitten my teeth and knocked out everything. But that was on the last groove.”
13 meters were enough for the World Cup title
Although the Swabian had “recently a strenuous phase” and was “not completely fit” due to elbow complaints, his goal for the World Championships was the gold medal. Even if the 30-year-old Kappel stayed far from his own world record of 15.07 meters, he fell three times further than 13 meters in the World Cup final.
For Kappel it is the third world championship title after 2017 and 2024. In Rio de Janeiro, the 2016 shot put in Schwäbisch Gemünd was also a paralympic winner. Kappel’s gold medal is the first for Team Germany at this Para World Cup. Previously, Leon Schäfer won silver in the long jump.
