The stock trading in Germany is largely in electronic form via electronic trading systems. Few today active investors are still likely to have physical securities in their possession. But the so -called paper stocks still exist – and they have a value.

• Hardly spread paper shares or “effective pieces” today
• no longer possible
• Paper stocks can still be very valuable

Around 90 percent of the stock trading in Germany is via Xetra, the electronic Trading system of the German stock exchange, processed. Unlike decades ago, the presence trade via stockbrokers and stock exchange dealers only plays a subordinate role directly on the stock market parquet. Accordingly, there are now also corporate shares in digital form, and there is no longer any further disclosure of actually physically existing stock papers. Nevertheless, the so -called “effective pieces”, i.e. securities in paper form, continue to exist. Investors should know about paper shares.

Trade on the stock exchange is no longer possible

Paper stocks were traditionally ownership customers who have secured a shareholder. The transfer of a paper share also resulted in a change of ownership. In 2016, however, the action of shares in this way was declared weak due to law. In this context, owners of securities certificates in physical form were asked to add their paper shares to a securities depot and to register as owners. For example, the owners kept all rights of a shareholder associated with the ownership of the stock, but the paper version was no longer transported afterwards. Even today, effective pieces that come from discounts or appear in bank lockers can still be booked in a share depot at some institutes. If the company’s share certificate is still traded on the stock exchange, the value is usually given for the last course, the owner will then receive distributions and dividends to the depot. After that, the stock can be traded on the stock exchange in a common way. However, there is a fee for this exchange – owners must therefore weigh whether this step pays off for them.

Increased by collectors

An alternative to re -booking into a stock endpot is the sale of the paper regardless of the current stock market course. Because the fact that the paper shares can no longer be traded on the stock exchange does not mean that they have no value anymore. In fact, old securities can even be extremely valuable in physical form, because they are considered coveted collector’s pieces and are also required as an investment. This is particularly a step that owners should take if the associated company is no longer listed on the stock exchange, then only the last possible stock market course can be used for booking into a depot. However, since the share is no longer traded, there is no buyer because there is no longer any trade.

Nevertheless, there are various platforms outside of the regulated stock market trade, on which paper shares are in demand. The value of the effective pieces depends, among other things, on the condition, but also after the share or the company name. Papers that are very old can also achieve high prices for collectors, especially if there were only a limited number on the market.

If you want to act paper stocks, you can contact special dealers and have the value of the paper appreciated. In the best case, this should be verified by another dealer. In addition, there are always effective pieces for auctions. Internet platforms often also offer such papers for purchase or act with them – but if possible rare collector’s pieces, it is advisable to consult a specializing in a specializing.
