Mesut Ozil hang up your boots. Extraordinary talent, considered among the strongest players in Europe, the German attacking midfielder played for the Turkish clubIstanbul Basaksehir coached by former Inter Emre Belozoglu. World champion with Germany in Brazil 2014, former Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Fenerbahçe, through an official statement issued through their social channels, officially announced – at just 34 years of age – his farewell to professional football after a career lived at high levels.

After considerations and reflections I announce my immediate retirement from professional football.

I have had the privilege of being a footballer for 17 years and I feel extremely grateful for this opportunity. But in recent times I have suffered injuries which made it clear to me that the time to say goodbye had come. The journey was exciting, seasoned with unforgettable moments and emotions. I want to thank my clubs – Schalke, Werder, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Basaksehir – and the coaches who have supported me, as well as teammates who have become friends.

Special thanks to my family and closest friends. They have been part of this journey since day one, giving me love and support in both good and bad times. Thanks to the fans, they showed me so much love…

Now I look aheadto my wonderful wife Amine and my two wonderful children, Eda and Ela, but rest assured you will hear from me again.”
