Oxford vaccine scientist: “We can’t vaccinate the entire planet every six months” | Coronavirus what you need to know

Andrew Pollard, the director of Oxford Vaccine Group – which developed one of the corona vaccines together with the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca – warns that, according to him, it is not possible to give the whole world a booster shot several times a year. “We cannot vaccinate the planet every four to six months. That is not sustainable or affordable,” Pollard said in an interview with the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

Pollard also emphasizes that in the future it will be necessary to focus mainly on the vulnerable within society, instead of giving doses to everyone aged 12 and older. More data is needed to say with certainty “whether, when and how often people who are vulnerable should receive additional doses,” says the professor. Pollard emphasizes that there must also be more scientific insight before we massively start administering a fourth shot, for which Israel has already given the green light.

Inequality

In an interview with the British television channel Sky News, the professor previously denounced the inequality in the vaccine rollout. Today, less than 10 percent of people in low-income countries have received their first dose. For that reason too, Pollard does not think it logical to administer fourth doses worldwide on a regular basis.

Still, the professor closed the interview on a positive note and believes we have already lived through the worst of the corona pandemic. “The world just has to get through the winter,” Pollard said.
