Overshadowed by queer hostility: joint single by Charli XCX and Sam Smith

“In the City” is about acceptance and the exciting nightlife. Not everyone likes that.

To mark the start of the weekend, Sam Smith and Charli XCX are releasing their dance single “In the City” on Thursday, October 19th. With glittering house sounds, the two create a track that is dedicated to the search for community on club nights.

In addition to Charli XCX and her boyfriend George Daniel, the song was produced by ILYA, AG Cook and Omer Ferdi. When the party track was released, the singer released a statement in which she explained that “In the City” represents the chaotic beauty of the friendships that you make on nights in gay bars around the world. “The song is about finding the people you really love and connecting with through wild nights and parties in magical places. “It’s about the feeling of being accepted, the awesomeness of being welcomed into queer spaces, and the unique people you meet there,” the 35-year-old wrote.

Many fans of the two artists were looking forward to the single, as both Charli XCX and Sam Smith had already teased the song with several social media posts. They didn’t officially confirm the collaboration, but many put two and two together and have already celebrated the collaboration between the two. Among other things, Sam Smith posted a lip sync video on Instagram with an excerpt from the new song.

Smith’s post received comments from happy fans as well as less friendly messages. Charli XCX spoke out: “I have never seen anyone receive so many hateful comments online in my life. “It was really discouraging,” the singer said in a TikTok video, encouraging Sam Smith: “At the same time, I’m so proud of Sam’s ability to endure it, because I know I couldn’t endure it. So, I want to say: Sam, I love you, I love our song together and I am in awe of your strength.”
