Hybrid Tesla with turbodiesel generator
The well-known YouTube channel “Warped Perception”, which has already caused a stir in the past with a converted hybrid Tesla S, has now converted its Tesla S again. Instead of the previous 400 cc internal combustion engine, a turbodiesel generator was now installed to further increase the range. The goal is to develop a Tesla that doesn’t rely on charging stations and can cover long distances without recharging. The car had to be converted so that the generator could fit in the trunk and supply power to the car’s battery. The generator was specially converted from a conventional diesel engine and adapted so that it fits into the car. The Tesla modified in this way, now called “wireless”, was then able to do without conventional battery charging at charging stations because the electricity was generated via the diesel generator.
Range of over 4,300 kilometers on one charge
To demonstrate the functionality of his invention, YouTuber Matt Mikka took a test drive. The normal all-electric Tesla Model S with dual-motor all-wheel drive has an electric range of 634 kilometers. The result of the conversion was a higher speed than a normal Tesla and a significantly longer range. He managed to drive almost 4,320 kilometers without having to visit a charging station. However, he was not spared visits to gas stations – and to a large extent. He had to buy a total of 290 liters of diesel for his tour, which corresponded to a total price of around 350 US dollars.
The new invention seems rather puzzling to many viewers. “How can anyone tolerate the sound of diesel screaming right behind their head, especially in a car that’s supposed to be soundproof?” said one comment. You need a high pain tolerance and commitment, the channel replied. The invention was probably created more for the fun of tinkering and less for a serious long-term project.
Next project planned with hybrid Wankel engine
For his next project, Matt says he plans to replace a diesel generator with a LiquidPiston pistonless rotary engine, which is similar to a hybrid Wankel engine. A significant advantage of this engine is its liquid cooling and the ability to produce the same output of 25 horsepower (equivalent to approximately 25.35 hp) as the previously used diesel engine, despite being significantly smaller in size.
