Every day a football field disappears from the Flemish forest
Between 2001 and 2021, 5,088 hectares of forest were felled with a permit in Flanders. That corresponds to an average of 242 hectares per year or about a football field per day, according to a new report from environmental organizations BOS+ and Greenpeace on Wednesday. Moreover, despite the compensation obligation, more forest is still being cut down than is being planted. The environmental organizations are therefore calling for an immediate moratorium on cutting down the most valuable forests and a general halt to deforestation by 2030.
