The disaster started on Friday, February 4, 1825. There was a heavy north -wester storm, accompanied by a spring flood on the Zuiderzee. As a result of the high drainage of the water, no fewer than 65 holes were hit in the dikes along the Zuiderzee, Zwartewater, IJssel and Vecht. Almost nothing remained from the Zeedijk between Kuinre and Zwartsluis. A terrible natural disaster in the IJsseldelta was the result. Almost a tenth part of the Overijssels territory was flooded by a wild water mass. Within the line running from Kuinre, Steenwijk, Meppel, Staphorst, Roete, Heino and Olst to the IJssel, everything was under water. The entire area bordered by the Zuiderzee, the IJssel and the Veluwe had turned into a swirling sea.
