Ostend center is one big cycling zone

In Ostend, there must be an end to the king of cars that endangers cyclists. Björn Anseeuw, Alderman for Mobility Ostend: “The maximum allowed speed in a cycling zone is 30 kilometers per hour. The Fietseling working group, which has been campaigning for more bicycle safety in Ostend for years, has long insisted on the new measure. Now they are satisfied. Marc Horrix, Fietseling Oostende: “We have been advocating such bicycle zones in the center for ten years. We are happy that there are now even three zones, but we had to exercise some patience for that.”

The working group emphasizes that a lot of communication is still needed. They notice every day that many car drivers still do not know what is and is not allowed in a cyclist zone. The city also promises to raise awareness and, in the long run, sanctions.
