Osnabrück (AP) – After the racist incident during the third division game at MSV Duisburg, Osnabrück’s offensive player Aaron Opoku felt that the game was stopped.
“The incident at our game against MSV Duisburg shocked me. It was an important sign for anyone who has been discriminated against before not to continue the game,” said the 22-year-old on the VfL website.
During the game on Sunday, the attacker from Osnabrück was attacked by a Duisburg fan. Opoku thanked his own club, the referee team, the MSV, the spectators for the reactions and solidarity. “I also thank you for every single message that I have personally received and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas – stay healthy,” he said. The offensive player will spend the Christmas days with his family and will not comment on the incident.
“It was not possible for Aaron to continue playing. He was devastated in the situation,” said VfL sporting director Amir Shapourzadeh after the game. For the first time in the top three German professional leagues, a game was initially interrupted due to racism and shortly afterwards even completely canceled. Numerous clubs had also shown solidarity with Opoku.
