15 tracks made it into the Academy’s pre-selection. But some expected names do not appear on the shortlist.
The Oscars will be awarded again in Hollywood on March 3, 2025. In addition to actors, directors and films, the Academy also awards gold trophies in music-related categories. For example, the award for the best original song from a film is to be honored. The preselection of the pieces that can give hope for the coming Oscar season has now been published.
No “The Last Showgirl”, no “Wicked”
What is noticeable: The big pop star names that recently dominated this category of the Academy Awards (such as Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo) are missing in 2025. What stands out in particular is that Miley Cyrus with her track “Beautiful That Way”, who she sang for the Gia Coppola drama “The Last Showgirl” starring Pamela Anderson, was not named. But the musical parts of “Wicked” also fell through the Oscar grid.
Elton John, Trent Reznor and Pharrell Williams are there
Those who can look forward to an early nomination are, for example, Elton John – he was included in the shortlist together with Brandi Carilie with the track “Never Too Late”. Pharrell Williams also made it onto the list with his “Piece by Piece” piece. Two works from the “Emilia Pérez” soundtrack found their way into the Academy shortlist. Good acquaintances in the category are also represented with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and their “Challengers” soundtrack.
The final Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025.
