The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is meeting to consider possible sanctions against Will Smith following his slap scandal at this year’s Academy Awards. Before Smith has already resigned from his membership in the film academy.

The President of the AMPAS Film Academy, David Rubin, is committed to a speedy process and states: “After Mr. Smith resigned from his membership of the Academy on Friday April 1st, a suspension or expulsion is no longer possible, and the schedule prescribed by law no longer applies. It is in the best interests of everyone involved that the matter is dealt with expeditiously.”

Analysis of the Oscar clamp:

A “tangible” scandal had previously occurred at the 2022 Oscars. After Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith stormed onto the stage and smacked Rock in the face with an open hand. Despite the incident and a prompt from Academy members, Smith did not leave the event and accepted his Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. In the acceptance speech, he apologized for his behavior. On March 29, a first meeting between Smith and senior members of the academy followed, which took place online.
