The meeting was part of the parole process for Pistorius, 35. Lawyer Tania Koen told AP that Pistorius and Steenkamp met face to face in June.

The purpose of the meeting is to give the victim’s relatives the opportunity to meet the offender if they so wish. After the meeting, the offender can apply for parole.

Koen did not disclose the details of the meeting.

– The discussion is private and confidential, so we ask that the privacy of our customers be respected, Koen told AP.

In South Africa, those convicted of a serious crime must serve at least half of their sentence before they are eligible for parole.

Pistorius was initially sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter, but the sentence was changed to murder and he was eventually sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Pistorius had already been scheduled for a parole hearing last year, but it was canceled because he had not met Steenkamp’s parents. Pistorius’ lawyer by Julian Knight according to him, his client has been a model prisoner and already met the requirements for parole last year.

Pistorius has served most of his sentence in a prison in the city of Pretoria, but was moved closer to the Steenkamp family’s hometown before the meeting.

Pistorius shot his girlfriend several times through the bathroom door at his home on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Pistorius claimed he mistook his girlfriend for a dangerous intruder, but was sentenced to prison for second-degree murder.

Both of Pistorius’ legs were amputated below the knees when he was still a baby. He won several gold medals in the Paralympics in his career.
