Daniele Orsato will receive the “Giulio Campanati” award (now in its fifth edition) on 12 September, at San Siro, a few minutes before the start of Italy-Ukraine, a match valid for qualifying for Euro 2024. This was communicated by the association “Friends of Giulio Campanati” and the date chosen for the announcement was not accidental.

Centenary

Indeed, today marks the centenary of the birth of Giulio Campanati and the Aia section of Milan, named after him, remembered him with a touching video and with a statement in which he defines him as “one of the most important and influential figures in the world of Italian and international arbitration “. Serie A referee from 1952 to 1966, with 166 direct matches, and international referee from 1956 to 1966, with 18 direct matches, including two Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals and the 1962 Fairs Cup final. He was also selected as a referee for the Rome Olympics football tournament in 1960. After finishing his refereeing career at the age of 42, he dedicated himself to a managerial career, becoming president of the Italian Referees Association from 1972 to 1990, the longest presidency in the history of the ‘Association. He was a meritorious manager of the FIGC and received the UEFA Order of Merit in 2000. Campanati died on 30 October 2011 in Milan, where he rests in the Monumental Cemetery. His name is registered among the illustrious and meritorious citizens in the Famedio of the same Monumental.

Fifth edition

In his memory, the “Giulio Campanati” award was established, which is awarded every two years to the best international referee in the final stages of the world and European championships. The “Amici di Giulio Campanati” association, together with the Aia section of Milan and under the patronage of the FIGC, has awarded the award, now in its fifth edition, to Daniele Orsato, from the Schio section, as best referee at the World Cup Qatar. Orsato, who officiated three matches during the event, including the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador and the semi-final between Argentina and Croatia, succeeds Bjorn Kuipers, Néstor Pitana and Nicola Rizzoli, awarded twice.
