Groenen played the entire game against Sweden (1-1) on Saturday evening at Bramall Lane in Sheffield. Afterwards, the internationals contacted friends and relatives in the stands. In order to keep the risk of more infections as small as possible, this is no longer happening. The cheek kisses and hugs that the players gave to acquaintances after the game already caused quite a few question marks on social media last night and that only increased after the news about Groenen.
The KNVB has also decided that journalists from writing media will now conduct the interviews with players digitally.
The Netherlands will continue the group stage on Wednesday with a match against Portugal, which also started the European Championship against Switzerland with a draw (2-2). It is still unclear whether goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal and defender Aniek Nouwen can participate. The pair were injured against Sweden before half time. It is not yet clear what the investigations in the hospital have yielded. The KNVB hopes to be able to report this on Sunday evening or otherwise on Monday.
