Opposition to partial doubling N34: ‘Unnecessary and sin’

The N34 working group wants to know what they think about doubling the N34 before the elections of the political parties in Aa en Hunze, Borger Odoorn and Tynaarlo. The working group itself is against the partial widening of this road, something the province is more positive about. The working group believes that the issue should be high on the political agenda.

According to the working group, there are two main arguments for opposing the widening. One of these is the outcome of a report from 2017. “The conclusion of this report is that there will be no capacity problem until 2040, provided the problem is solved at the roundabout at Gieten,” says Jan van Zomeren of the working group. “We are also in favor of solving the throughput at Gieten. We believe that this should be seen separately from the discussion about partial widening.”

In addition, the group believes that the problem of safety will not be solved by doubling the number. “It is described as a dangerous road. Nonsense. The behavior of the motorists makes it a dangerous road,” explains Van Zomeren. “A overtaking ban with a separation from the roads will make the road safer than doubling it.”
