In my 29th year I notice that I am increasingly being addressed with ‘you’ and ‘Madam’. The young one is off. I am discussing this new phenomenon with friends on the Saturday Noordermarkt. Less than five minutes later I hear: “Madam, do you want a piece of cheese?” From the cheese farmer. I thank and walk on.

“Young lady, what can I do for you?” It sounds right behind me. Just check how young they are then. The Jordanian wife smiles, puts her walker down and starts her weekly cheese ordering.
