During my seminar, the teacher often dropped the word ‘heuristics’. It rolled so easily out of his mouth, as if everyone in the room already knew the meaning of the word for a long time. I looked around. Nobody looked crazy about it. Only I seemed to be there with a growing doubt: should I have known this? That afternoon I googled the word. I turned out not to be the only one who comes to insight through detours.
