I just attended an interview with a young Dutch writer. He beautifully explained how in his autobiographical novels the main character can simply disappear, can simply be erased. Even if he doesn’t put any effort into it, it happens naturally in his stories. After the interview I want to have my book signed, I am at the front of the line. He begins his inscription and empties his pen in five words. The end of his signature and name are barely readable. “See,” he smiles, “story of my life.”
