Just like nowadays with e-bikes, bicycles often changed ownership in the 1970s. This is also the case in Groningen. It became so bad there that the Executive Board of the University felt compelled to send a message to all institutions and laboratories. It stated that if you were caught when stealing a bicycle, which could have very adverse consequences for your career. A student from the Laboratory for Technical Physics had written below: “If you have a bike, you don’t need a career!”
