The new Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will be the representative of Kuwait, Haisam Al-Gais, reported on the organization’s website.

“The conference [членов ОПЕК] by acclamation decided to appoint Haytham al-Gais from Kuwait as the Secretary General of the organization from August 1, 2022 for a period of three years, ”it was reported.

Al-Gais will replace Nigeria’s representative Mohammad Barkindo, who has been in office for two consecutive terms since 2016, as Secretary General. Barkindo’s mandate will expire on July 31, 2022.

Hayesam al-Gais was Kuwait’s representative to OPEC from 2017 to June 2021. He is currently the Deputy Managing Director of Marketing at Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. Bloomberg notes that al-Gais has been in the oil industry for three decades.

As the newspaper writes with reference to the interview of the new secretary general to the Al Arabiya TV channel, al-Gais plans to meet the growing demand for oil in the world without causing an excess of supply in the market.
