The Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has officially announced that it will cease its operations in North America and Europe, following weeks of speculation and rumors. As a result, consumers in these regions can no longer expect to find OnePlus smartphones available for purchase.

OnePlus Bids Farewell to Europe

Founded in 2013 in China, OnePlus initially garnered attention for its limited editions and competitively priced devices known as “flagship killers.” However, as the demands for smartphones have increased—particularly concerning storage capacity and pricing—OnePlus has found it increasingly challenging to meet customer expectations.

Moreover, the company struggled to maintain its unique marketing strategies and gradually lost its distinctive charm. This withdrawal marks OnePlus as the first major player to completely exit the North American and European markets due to internal restructuring.

Since becoming a part of the Oppo group in 2021, there have been many changes within OnePlus, but a spokesperson clarified that the decision to withdraw was not directed by Oppo. Interestingly, another subsidiary brand, Realme, is set to leave the Chinese market to focus on international sales instead. In an interview with The Verge, OnePlus provided insights not only on the reasons for its exit but also on the implications for its existing user base.

What’s Next for OnePlus Users?

The discontinuation of OnePlus operations in these key markets also means the end of its proprietary operating system, OxygenOS. Although future software support will be available for the OnePlus 13 and 15 models, it will now be provided through Oppo’s ColorOS platform. Currently, OnePlus has no plans to halt its operations in other countries where its smartphones continue to enjoy popularity, such as India.

Interestingly, there are no immediate plans for Oppo smartphones to enter the U.S. market either. As a result, the future trajectory of OnePlus remains uncertain, and it will be interesting to see how the brand attempts to revitalize itself in the long run.
