The number of homes created by converting office buildings has decreased again, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The number has also fallen considerably in Drenthe.
In 2024, only 90 home transformations took place in Drenthe, in 2023 this was still 175 and in 2022 still 225. The number of converted office buildings in Drenthe is also relatively low compared to other provinces. For example, 250 transformations took place in Friesland and 370 in Groningen.
Every year, CBS maps housing transformations for the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning. A transformation is the reuse of existing buildings, whereby the use of the building is (partly) converted from a non-residential function to a residential function. The largest number of transformed homes last year came from old office buildings.
The transformations, together with new construction, ensure that the housing stock increases.
In Drenthe, buildings have been converted most often in Hoogeveen, about 30 times in total. This accounts for 22 percent of all housing additions in the municipality. The number of transformations is also relatively high in Coevorden, namely 15 times. There that is about 16 percent of all added homes.
In a number of Drenthe municipalities, not a single building was converted last year. For example, the number of housing transformations in the municipalities of Aa en Hunze, Noordenveld, Westerveld and De Wolden is zero.
